Rank Structure

The standard Dan-i Dojo ranks form the main progression pathway for most players, while special course types such as Bonus Dojo are covered on their own pages.

Each rank has its own course, with a unique set of three songs and exam conditions that must be cleared in order to earn that title.

The ranking system progresses from the beginner-friendly Kyuu ranks, through the numbered Dan ranks, and finally into the prestigious title ranks: Kurouto, Meijin, Choujin, and Tatsujin.

As players progress through the ranks, the clear conditions become increasingly demanding, placing a greater emphasis on accuracy, consistency, and control.

Kyuu Ranks

These consist of:

5th Kyuu (五級)
4th Kyuu (四級)
3rd Kyuu (三級)
2nd Kyuu (二級)
1st Kyuu (一級)

As the number gets smaller, the rank becomes higher. This means 1st Kyuu is higher than 5th Kyuu.

The Kyuu ranks are an excellent starting point if you’re attempting Dan-i Dojo for the first time or are still becoming comfortable with lower-difficulty charts.

Dan Ranks

These consist of:

1st Dan (初段), also pronounced ‘Shodan’
2nd Dan (二段)
3rd Dan (三段)
4th Dan (四段)
5th Dan (五段)
6th Dan (六段)
7th Dan (七段)
8th Dan (八段)
9th Dan (九段)
10th Dan (十段)

Unlike the Kyuu ranks, the Dan ranks increase as the number becomes larger. This means 10th Dan is the highest numbered Dan rank.

For many players, the Dan ranks represent the core progression of Dan-i Dojo. As you climb higher, the songs become more demanding, exam conditions become stricter, and consistency becomes increasingly important.

Title Ranks

After successfully passing 10th Dan, players unlock access to the title ranks.

Unlike the numbered Dan ranks, the title ranks must be cleared sequentially. Each title is unlocked only after passing the previous one.

Kurouto (玄人)
Meijin (名人)
Choujin (超人)
Tatsujin (達人)

These are commonly referred to by the community as the Jin Dans, since each title ends with the kanji 人 (jin).

Kurouto

Kurouto is the first title rank after 10th Dan. It marks the transition from the numbered Dan ranks into the highest levels of Dojo.

Meijin

Meijin is the second title rank and represents a significant increase in difficulty. Players are expected to demonstrate strong consistency, excellent accuracy, and reliable performance across challenging charts.

Choujin

Choujin sits above Meijin and below Tatsujin. Courses at this level are extremely demanding and require exceptional precision, stamina, and consistency.

Tatsujin

Tatsujin is the highest standard rank in Dan-i Dojo. Earning this title is considered one of the most prestigious achievements in Taiko no Tatsujin and requires mastery across every aspect of gameplay.

Annual Course Changes

Dan-i Dojo courses are updated each year. While the overall rank structure remains the same, each year’s courses feature different songs and clear conditions. Depending on your individual strengths and playstyle, you may find some years more challenging than others.
